Matthew Chapter 5……..

Jesus teaching on a few issues…..

1. Blessed are the spiritually poor, the kingdom of heaven is theirs.

Who are the spiritually poor? How do we treat the spiritually poor?

2. Blessed are those who mourn, who weep about sin and long for how things are suppose to be, they will be comforted.

I love this passage. It screams brokenness to me.

3. Blessed are the meek and gentle, they will inherit the earth.

It’s always amazing how Jesus chose his words. We live in a world where to be meek can be looked at as weak as well. Gentle can equal girly or sissy. Not enough, as Mark Driscoll would say, “manly men” around any more.

4. Blessed are tose who hunger and thirst for righteousness, they will be filled.

Again, Jesus using words that should clearly explain how we are to act and react. Thirst and hunger are two extreme indicators that something is not right in our body. When we hunger and thirst it’s our body telling us that we are missing something that we need to function properly. And here Jesus is telling us to thirst and hunger for righteousness. And what about this righteousness. Is he not only asking us to be righteous, but to also pursue the things in the world that are unrighteous? Things like injustice perhaps?

5. Blessed are the merciful, they will be shown mercy.

So simple, yet so extremely difficult.

6. Blessed are those who are pure in heart, they will see God.

Pure in heart. Could and probably does mean a lot of things. To me it means without an angle. TO love just to be loving. No agenda.

7. Blessed are the peacemakers, they will be called children of God.

Hello. Anyone in Washington listening to this? Just asking.

8. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, the kingdom of heaven is theirs.

It amazes me how much we take for granted here in america. A church on every corner. Able to worship however, whenever, and wherever we like. I have some friends from Vietnam who have to post lookouts just to have a Bible study. they will be killed if they are caught, but they still do it anyway. i wonder if we would in the same situation?

Shalom….
